Study Permits

Study Permits

In order to study in Canada, you must first be accepted by a designated learning institution (DLI) and then obtain a Study Permit. You must apply before coming to Canada and present all the required documents.

This will include:

  • Proof of enrollment to DLI (acceptance letter, registration of courses)
  • Proof of funds (tuition fees receipt, living expenses for yourself, transportation etc.)
  • Proof that you are admissible to Canada based on criminal record and health exam
  • Proof that you will leave Canada when your study permit expires

You don’t need a Study Permit if you plan to be in school for less than 6 months.

Once you receive study permit, you will be allowed to work as per terms and conditions specified on your study permit. Usually, you are allowed to work part time (maximum of 20 hours per week) during your studies and full-time (minimum of 30 hours per week) during your school breaks.

In addition, after your studies you may be eligible to apply for Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) that will be an open work permit, meaning you may legally work for any employer in Canada full-time or part-time.

Student Direct Stream

If you are from China, India, Pakistan, the Philippines, Senegal or Vietnam, you may consider applying via Student Direct Stream, which is a faster way to obtain your Study Permit (within 20 calendar days).

You also must present all the usual required documents, but also include your Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC), get your medical exam and police certificate(s) before you apply (if you need one); and have your language test results.

You may not be eligible if you don’t reside in one of the above-listed countries.

Note:

Study permit is not a visa, it won’t let you enter Canada. You must receive eTA before coming to Canada, if required.
